After you have your passport/visa/yellow fever shot/anti-diarrhea medicine/ anti-malaria pills in hand.

The 3 worst things you will face in Africa, if you are a foreigner from outside of Africa are: Long-term diarrhea(which can kill you), mosquitoes(malaria is possible) and a possible heat stroke(public trans knows nothing of air-conditioned vehicles). So prepare to avoid all 3 in advance. Oh too, make sure where you stay has a generator, as electricity could go out at any moment in Africa!
