I live in Japan and I might transfer to either Hong Kong, the US or England. I have an African Grey, two parakeets and a cockatiel.

<p><i>Answer by M2MM</i><br/>Don't even consider the USA, because they currently have a ban on ALL live-bird imports from: Afghanistan, Albania, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cambodia, Djibouti, Egypt, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire), Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestinian Autonomous Territories, People's Republic of China, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, South Sudan, Sudan, Thailand, Togo, Turkey, Ukraine, and Vietnam

Japan is on their list. And, as African Greys are on the CITES list, you are likely to have great difficulty moving your African Grey parrot to any country that honors the CITES agreement. Regardless of the fact that it's your pet, other countries have to uphold this agreement. But, to be sure contact the departments of Agriculture, Import/Customs departments for any country that you are considering moving to. Only they can advise you on whether or not they will even allow your birds to come with you. They will also advise you on their quarantine procedures and what documentation will be needed prior to your departure from Japan.

As for the actual transfer, contact JAL to enquire about their live-animal requirements for shipping and get it in writing.

You may also wish to join a few African Grey or Parrot forums. Other people have successfully moved from one country to another with their birds, and getting advice from those with the real experience is invaluable.</p>
