How did the genocide in Rwanda reflect...?

How did the genocide in Rwanda reflect the consequences of European imperialism from the 19th century?
Thank you! 10 points best answer, please help!! I need it for my Global HW. The answer doesn't have to be too long.

Rwanda best answer:

Answer by Chili
European imperialists are often blamed for bringing the "lighter skin is righter" mentality to indigenes of colonized lands in Africa. European Imperialists put some of these lighter skinned people in positions of power. The Rwandan genocide happened after these people forgot they were essentially the same race. They were simply segregated according to certain features (light skin, skinny noises).

That's a dumbed down version of what happened.
