Which are the best cities in Morocco to visit to know the country best?

I am going on a 7 day visit to Morocco. Surely, I cannot visit the whole country. Please suggest me the best cities. Thanks in advance.

Answer by Ghiz
What would you like to see? Personally, I love the Rif mountains and the Mediterranean Coast, but I don't think a first timer should go there.
My personal favourites:
- Rabat: beautiful old city with a nice medina and some highlights
- Meknes: just like Rabat and you can visit Volubilis
- Fes: A 'real' Moroccan city, big, chaotic and not so full with tourist as Marrakech
Some things you can't miss:
- Marrakech is a must visit - however, I do believe Marrakech is a bit overrated.
- Casablanca: big, chaotic city (even a bit ugly), but you can visit the Hassan II mosque. One of the biggest (I thought third) of the world and the only mosque a non-Muslim can visit (which is really impressive)
I also went for 7 days and this was my itinerary:
Day 1: arrive in Casablanca, visit the mosque and depart to Rabat
Day 2: from Rabat to Meknes
Day 3: from Meknes to Volubilis to Fes
Day 4: Fes
Day 5: Fes - Ifrane - Beni Mellal - Marrakech
Day 6: Marrakech
Day 7: Marrakech - Casablanca flight back home
