I watched Shutter Island this weekend and need some questions answered?

I thought it was a good movie that made you think. The only thing I have been questioning myself about is: Is he actually a real detective that went on the island for investigation? Or is the whole movie just a viewpoint of his hallucinations?

Answer by Cesaria Barbarossa
He WAS (past-tense) a marshall, so I think the beginning part of the movie was a glimpse inside his head at the delusion he created for himself on why he was there. You remember the doctor said he'd been there for two years, but over the last couple days they allowed him to play the fantasy out that he'd created in his head with hopes he would end up accepting the truth. I'm not 100% sure about the boat scene. That's my guess. If it was a delusion, i'm not sure where it started being actual reality (with the doctor acting as his partner) because how could they have transported him to the ferry, get him on it and have him believe that he has left the mainland for Shutter Island, unless they sedated him. I guess the point is to keep us wondering...
