How to plan the best trip to Rio Carnival in Brazil 2014?

How to plan the best trip to Rio Carnival in Brazil 2014?

I have done some searches on google for information on Carnival but the amount of information seems to be endless! I know Brazil can be a very dangerous place - so any suggestions on where to stay? I read somewhere that Fona Sul is a good area because it is pretty safe and close to where the festivities will be. How long would you stay if you where going? I was thinking about about 6 or 7 nights since the Carnival lasts 4? is that correct? Also I saw where you need to buy tickets to different events that are going on - Any thoughts on must see things while at Carnival? I also read that this is a trip you really need to plan in advance for, Im I planning to soon? Or in plenty enough time? Also I would just like any other information that you think would be helpful in my trip to Brazil! Would it be smarter to just use a local travel agent to help??

Answer by Zoƫ
While Brazil can be dangerous, Carnival is one of the biggest events in the world and is relatively safe for travelers who keep their wits about them. Check out the article in the sources for some good tips.

You're not planning too far in advance! This is the time to really research what you want to see and make some decisions. Travel agents sometimes know of certain deals, but it is generally better to do your research before you go in to see one.

As far as other things to do, it looks like the Rio Music Conference is right after Carnival, so maybe you want to check that out too! Check out the link in comments to see info on that and other stuff to do!
