How do I get from Italy to Istanbul fastest and easiest?

I'm doing a low budget, backpack type trip for a honeymoon, and would love to see both Italy and Istanbul in the same trip. I heard there is a boat from Bari, Italy to somewhere in Greece, and then a 21 hour train ride from there to Istanbul. I need to know more details, though, and any other possibilities. Any help is appreciated.
