How much is it total to use skype on a verizon phone in Eastern Afghanistan?

I am getting deployed to Afghanistan and wanted to know the rates to use a phone over there... Verizon has made is somewhat confusing for me and wanted to know if yall could dumb it down a bit for me. I need to know how much it is for internet usage on a verizon phone over there because i'm sure i'd have to have that to use skype. Thanks!

Answer by Marc
Take this with a pinch of salt, but I have this general rule of thumb for VoIP calls: 1 GB of your data plan will be used in about 1200 minutes of talking (twenty hours).
There are many variables that can influence the actual results, but the figure above can give you a good idea.
When they give you a plan other than unlimited, they *should* allow you to measure your usage somehow, be it Verizon or whoever, so it is a good idea to double check if they give you that feature. I give you a general example applied to VoIP (it is not Skype, not a mobile, but it applies as an example), I have a VoIP plan with a given provider that gives me 2000 minutes of calls, and at the moment of this writing I have 'consumed' exactly 185 minutes (and in my case it chewed up 0.4 GB because it is high definition audio that uses a lot of bandwidth). Bleh, so much for the technical parlance... my point is, they should tell you how to keep track on how of your monthly data plan you have been using, on a month per month basis.
Also, check the processor of the phone, since Skype will use the 'computer' part of your smart phone. For instance, a blackberry will run typically at about 600 or 500 Mhz (which is not bad for a smartphone) whereas a Nexus One has a processor that runs about *twice* as fast and an application like Skype would *love* it.
A last hint, Speaking of Nexus and Skype... make sure that Skype runs on your phone of choice, or that you can run some alternative program (even if it is not supplied by Skype) that will let you use Skype with your phone of choice, right? For instance, someone has released an application called fring (www.fring.com) that connects to several services from a smart phone. It is not my favourite but it works. Of course, you will want to try whatever you end up putting together *before* taking off for deployment, right? Also, check out with Verizon or some fellow how will it work in Afghanistan. You don't want to arrive there to find that there is no signal on your phone.
All the best,
Marc
