What camera should I get for a trip to Colombia?

I want to travel Colombia for 45 days and take lots of photos , but I don't want something bulky or too complex .
Another factor is avoiding theft . Also , do the newer cell phones take decent photos ?
I appreciate your suggestions .
What megapixel do I need ?

I travel with my Panasonic Lumix SZ20. I use a 32GB SDHC class 10 and carry 2 batteries and recharge them every night. You can fit thousands of photos and hours of video, even at 1080p 60 frames per second.
The zoom in this camera is so powerful and steady I am always amazed. The stabilization is awesome. You can take panoramic shots very easily because the camera does the stitching internally and all you do is press the shutter and pan the camera. It has GPS and it can auto-tag your photos with location.
Modern cell phones can take fair photos but never like a camera, especailly the zoom and stabilization. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 but still carry the camera because there is no comparison.
