question about slave trade back during the beginning of africas empire ghana?

i just started reading about the african empire of ghana in my textbook, and i was hoping someone could answer a question about it cuz i know my ss teacher probably wont go over it ( he isnt a very good teacher). so the textbook was describing some things they traded (gold, ostritch feathers..etc). then they said slaves. so i was wondering, did they trade their own people two become slaves? or did they buy other peoples?
