Is it True Russian Ladies Are Not Interested in Pursuing a Career?
lady
There are a number of myths on the Internet about Russian ladies. Some claim that Russian women are submissive; others that all Russian women are beautiful. I remember reading an article that all this "Russian ladies for marriage" business is a huge scam and that it is impossible to find a good Russian lady online. While there are reasons behind most of the myths, they are still just myths and shouldn't be taken seriously.
One of the biggest myths is that Russian ladies are not interested in careers and if you marry a Russian woman, you will have to support her for the rest of your life. This myth is widespread mostly because Russian women are known to be family-oriented and to put the interests of their families before their own. I have to remind you though that while I am trying to do my best to describe Russian women and their culture, there always are exceptions. I know a Russian woman in her 30s who likes to party like a rock star and who doesn't want to have children. I know one Ukrainian woman in her late 20s who keeps getting different degrees and has dreams of becoming a very successful business lady; children are not in her plans in the next 10 years. There are also mothers in Russia who are not competent enough to be parents, so their children end up in orphanages. It is not safe to assume that simply because the woman is Russian, she will be a wonderful wife and a great mother. You have to get to know her first and see for yourself whether or not she is right for you, regardless of what you heard and what you read on the Internet.
Those women, who are in the majority, do put their families and especially their children first, and this is why they actually are interested in careers.
If you look at the profiles of Russian ladies who are looking for foreign husbands you can see that most of them have college degrees and have jobs. Russian maternity leave laws are much friendlier than American ones, so it is possible for a woman to raise a child without losing her job. Many Russian women work, but since maternity leave is up to 3 years, many of them stay home when their children are still young.
In Russian culture it is also common for grandparents to raise their grand kids if both of the parents are forced to (or want to) work.
Most of the women who come to the U.S. to marry end up either going to college to get an American degree or taking courses which will help them find a job later. Americans often find Russians to be pessimists, but Russians call themselves realists. They know that life is full of surprises and that they are not always the pleasant ones. Even if their financial situation allows them to stay at home, Russian women want to have an education and a diploma just in case. They want to be sure that if something happened with their marriage or their spouse, they would be able to support themselves and most importantly, their children.
I don't think you should worry about the fact that your Russian wife will not want to work when she comes here. Most of them will be more willing to, but if the issue is really important to you, I suggest you discuss this before marriage just to be sure.
