What Are The Main Causes of Disease And Ill-Health In The United States Today?
United States
This article discusses some of the main causes of disease and ill-health in the United States, including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer and mental health problems.
There are a number of factors that contribute to heart disease, including high cholesterol, poor diet and low levels of physical activity. Heart disease remains one of the biggest causes of death in the United States. Although there is now a decline in deaths in the elderly, the death rate is still increasing amongst middle-aged people, especially those aged 45 years old and older.
Along with heart disease, rates of diabetes are also increasing across all ages, with the biggest increase seen in those over 65 years of age. As well as problems with managing blood glucose levels, diabetes causes many other health conditions. Glaucoma in the eyes is common, as is heart disease and increased risk of infection. There is no real cure for diabetes, with the exception of a pancreas transplant, which truly is the last treatment option for those with type 1 diabetes.
The most common type of diabetes in the United States and globally is type 2 diabetes. It is often possible to manage this with a healthy lifestyle alone, or at other times with medical treatments. Both of these can allow diabetics to live a normal life.
In the United States, over 33% of adults are obese and around 17% (around 12.5 million) of young people aged less than 19 years old are obese. Levels of obesity are also rising quickly in very young children. Obesity is a very complicated condition and the emphasis on how to support obese people has changed over the last few years.
Cancer is another big cause of death in the United States. However, death rates for cancers are now beginning to decline. Not only are cancer treatments continuing to improve, but there are also improvements in protection and detection of a number of cancers. Levels of lung cancer are dropping; probably due to the fewer smokers, but lung cancer is still the biggest cause of cancer deaths in the United States.
Levels of disabilities are increasing too. Around 1 in 5 Americans now have a disability. Arthritis remains the most common disability, affecting around 21 million adults. As well as drug management of this debilitating disorder, there is now an increased emphasis on helping people to manage their arthritis. In real terms, this means that medical professionals help sufferers to learn how to manage their arthritis on a daily basis, as well as assisting them to making lifestyle changes such as increasing activity levels and managing their weight. Other disabilities include back and spinal problems and more women than men have a disability across all age groups.
There are also increases in mental health disorders. Although few people feel confident in speaking about their mental health, the number of diagnosed mental health disorders is continuing to rise, with major depression being one of the main mental health disorders in the United States. Within the last decade, more than 1 in 20 Americans aged 12 and over reported suffering with depression, with around 7% of adults suffering with depression at any one time. Around 11% of teenagers suffer with depression and an additional 3.3% of teenagers suffer with 'severe' depressive disorders. In both adults and teenagers, females are more prone to depression than males.
Disease is not just affecting older people, there is more ill-health seen in young people today. In the last ten years or so, a number of diseases, such as heart disease and cancers, only seen in adults, are now occurring in young people.
