How to Select a Set of Ladies Golf Clubs

If you are a lady golfer you will more than likely have already found that your choice is very limits when you are trying to purchase your golf clubs.

This is really not the best situation when you are trying to buy a complete set of golf clubs for yourself. You will find that you need a set which fits you perfectly and is also comfortable and easy to use. Like any male golfer you also want to get the most out of your game.

Why are There so few Ladies Golf Sets available?

The reason for this is that up till recently there were really not that many women golfers and manufacturers have a huge market in men's sets. Women players made up a very small percentage of golfers and thus manufacturers went for the maximum profit in sales. Although the golf market is extremely large female golfers are a small percentage of players.

This means that a manufacturer cannot justify the research and design needed to provide ladies with golf clubs of any similar standard to a man's set.

Thank goodness, these days some companies have realised that there are women players who actually want a decent set of clubs, and also want a choice of club flex, swing weights and lofts. Currently there very few available in regular golfing shops but many can now be ordered from online stores which always have a huge selection and are normally at reduced prices.

Fortunately there now some good new golf club lines that are designed just for women golfers, including golf club sets purpose built for women.

How do Women Golfers Differ from Men Golfers?

On the whole, lady golfers require shorter clubs with a higher loft than men and they will usually have a slower swing speed than a male golfer.

There are of course the exceptions to this rule as you do sometimes find women who have stronger swings than men. But we have to say that this is unusual.

For the regular woman golfer there are other points to be considered.

Choosing Drivers for Women Golfers

Ladies' Swing Speed

A lady golfer should first try to determine the swing speed with a driver and if she has one, with a five iron. If the swing speed is faster than 70mph the lady golfer should be able to use a titanium faced driver. She will benefit from the advantage of the spring effect from this type of club.

However, if her swing speed is around 60mph then a titanium faced driver is needed but unfortunately these are hard to come by. Specially made clubs would be ideal here but they unfortunately carry a high price tag.

Club Face Loft

With a lady golfer, the slower the swing the higher the loft should be. If the lady golfer finds it easy to get the ball in the air then a loft face of 14 degrees will be a good match. Most ladies however have trouble getting the ball into the air and thus a loft face of 16 degrees would be best.

Ladies' Fairway Woods

For the lady golfer who has a swing speed of 60 mph there is no need to have a 3 wood in the bag, rather she should start with a 5 wood. She should make sure that there is a 1" difference between each club so her 7 wood will be 1" shorter than her 5 wood.

For the few ladies with a swing speed of 70mph, it is advisable to choose a 3 wood with a 16 degree loft as this will keep the ball in the air for longer.

Irons for a Lady Golfer

A lady golfer with a slower swing speed should have as her longest iron a 6 or 7 iron. For slower swings fairway woods and hybrids replace the long irons.

Hybrid for Ladies

Ladies should use hybrids to replace the long irons. Some sets now have the hybrids up to the 7 iron and other sets replace all the irons with the exception of the wedges.

Wedges for Lady Golfers

It is important to be sure that the pitching wedge has at least 4 degrees more loft than the 9 iron and that the sand wedge has a loft of 56 degrees or more. If there is a larger difference the lady golfer might also need a gap wedge.

One Last Point...

It is important to know the swing speed and the correct length of club before buying. Most people use clubs that are too long, be sure to check this out first.
