Here's what I do:
I create simple software that take me about 5-10 minutes to create and then submit them to shareware sites.
Software sites scrape off of each other so not only will you get an initial burst of high Page Rank backlinks, but you'll get long term backlink growth by doing absolutely nothing. It's a viral process that also produces initial results like indexing and increased rankings on Google for keywords of your choice.
Most software sites have a huge Page Rank, some exceeding 7. The goal of these software sites is to get the most software / freeware / shareware they can get, so that they're the most attractive to their visitors and have the most "stuff".
So, I leverage that. I create a simple software online and then fill out a PAD file, which tells the software sites what my software is about and where to find it. And, since I host the software, these sites have no choice but to point a link to my site. In addition, I can create keyword targeted descriptions and an anchor text link, which will appear on most of the sites I submit to. This tells the search engines what my site is about and boosts my rankings for those terms.
