I know that the peace corps is an independent agency within the executive branch. Are there other agencies in foreign relations that are similar to the peace corps?

<p><i>Answer by Ted Pack</i><br/>USAID - the last three letters stand for "Agency for International Development", but I suspect the acronym was picked first and the full name created to fit - is close. They tend to hire older, more skilled people to do more important tasks, and pay them more. My uncle, who is a college professor in economics, worked for them a couple of times. He went to Barbados and Lesotho, both times to help a developing country draft a five-year economic plan.
