How was the rule of the british in burma similar to or different from the rule of the French in Vietnam?

<strong>Myanmar best answer:</strong>
<p><i>Answer by Walter B</i><br/>1) The country "Vietnam" never existed under French rule. The French had five (5) Indochinese colonies -- Tonkin, Annam and Cochin China which compose current-day Vietnam along with Laos and Cambodia.
2) The French did not give away land in exchange for other land. The British gave part of Peninsular Malaya to the Thai king in exchange for land on the east of Burma which was originally part of Thailand. It is the three Muslim provinces of Southern Thailand where there is a lot of fighting.
3) The British did not like marrying with local women (they had many as mistresses) whilst the French were happy to openly marry local women.
4) The British built good roads and rail lines throughout the "Indian Empire" of which Burma was part. The French only built a small number of roads and one North-South rail line (Hanoi, Saigon).
5) The British used more Indians as leaders and treated the Burmans as lesser people and the other ethnic groups as even lower. The French treated the Nam Viets (Vietnamese), especially the Annamese from around Hue, as the predominant people whilst treating the other ethnic groups as lesser, including the Laotians and Cambodians.
6) Rice and Rubber were the main exports from the "Vietnamese" area of French Indochina while gemstones (Sapphires) also came from Cambodia along with rubber, rice, silver and teak. Tea was already grown in Northern "Vietnam" (Tonkin) and the French introduced the growing of coffee (which was/is of poor quality). The British introduced tea plantations into India and parts of Burma. Rubber was also grown in Burma and there are also a number of gemstone (Sapphire) producing areas.
7) The British introduced English into the schools but allowed the local languages to thrive. The French imposed the "Romanized" script upon the Vietnamese language instead of the Chinese script which the Vietnamese had been using from ancient times. The Romanized script was devised by a Jesuit priest around 1650 while it was imposed onto the Vietnamese around 1760's. French was used in High schools and the one university in Hanoi.
8) The British imposed "British Law" on their colonies (one is innocent until proven guilty and it is the job of the prosecution to prove guilt) whilst the French imposed "Napoleonic Law" (one is guilty until proven innocent and it is the accused job to prove themselves innocent).</p>
