how did the english manage to retain calais after the fall of the rest of english held france?

Calais remained in English hands until it was lost by Mary and Phillip around a century later, how on earth did they defend Calais at the time of Joan of arc's reconquest and for the remaining time it was held? Presumably by agreement? I assume the same applies to Gibraltar but I understand that more due to British naval ability does the same apply here?
PS it's back in English hands now though frenchies!!

Answer by Tim D
No doubt the nearness of Calais to Britain helped, as did the wall around it.

Gibraltar
