When you mail to a country that uses a different alphabet, which do you use to write the address?

When you mail to a country that uses a different alphabet, which do you use to write the address?

I am shipping a package to a friend in Belarus from USA. He is not so helpful with figuring this out for me.
Do I have to write his address in both languages?
Also, their format is different than the american standard (essentially in reverse order of ours), what format do I write it in?

Belarus best answer:

Answer by Stimpson J. Cat
Write the English version. Then draw a vertical line to the right of that. Then write the foreign language script in the format the foreign country prefers to the right of the vertical line. You don't have to understand what you're writing, just copy the lines and forms.

To mark six months since the crackdown in Belarus, English PEN joined the Belarus Free Theatre, Free Belarus Now, Index on Censorship and other members of the Belarus Committee at the National Theatre to raise and maintain awareness of the current situation. Theatre-goers, passers by, and special guests were invited to sign a petition and to write postcards to our cases of concern. Many thanks to everyone that came along!
