Albania Peace Corps Director, Holding up Albanian flag, 1997

After the military evacuation we spent a week recuperating in Bucharest, Romania. At the final farewell party, Nelson, the PC Director, received a flag autographed by all the current PCV's from Albania. Although the civil unrest caused Peace Corps Albania to close down, Nelson vowed that when PeaceCorps returned to Albania again, this flag would hang on the building's wall. This flag did hang again when the US started Peace Corps again in 2001. The woman crying on the left was an Albanian from Korce who had to leave with her PCV fiance. It was an emotional time for everyone; she did not know when Albania would be safe enough to return.
