5172. The photo is taken between 1937, when HMAS AUSTRALIA [II] received a Seagull V or Walrus aircraft, and April 1938, when she went into dock for an extended modernization. But what is happening here - a line in the water to the port side of both ships, and there seems to be far too many spectators for it to be either a tow or routine situation.
It's a situation that really cries out for more information.
