<h3>What country in Francophone Africa (and maybe more specifically city/cities) would you...?</h3>

Recommend a first-time traveler to Africa should visit? I'm a staunch traveler but have never been to Africa.

I was thinking the Republic of Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, or Mauritania?

It really depends on what your interests are. If you are interested in Game and Wildlife, I suggest East and Southern Africa; Tanzania the serengeti), Zambia, Kenya (lots of wildlife in the Masai Mara and Kenya national parks plus you can see Mount Kenya too! and the wildebeest migration which is spectacular see http://www.ultimateafrica.com/travel/Wildebeest_migration.html), Botswana (Chobe Natinal Park)and South Africa (Numerous parks). If you love water such as lakes and waterfalls then Zambia is the best for that. Zambia alone has atleast 12 waterfalls includng the mighty Victoria falls which it shares with Zimbabwe and Kalmbo falls which is the 12th highest in the world. (For more information on Zambia, see http://www.zambiatourism.com/travel/places/waterfalls.htm). In zambia Livingstone to be specific) you can also go bunjee jumping, paragliding, gorge swinging, micro lighting, white water rafting (probably the best rapids in the world) birdwatching and fishing. You can even try out a crocodile burger at kalimba Reptile farm in Lusaka. If you are interested in Deserts the Namibia and Niger will be your spot. I can recommend seeing the sahara desert from Agadez (once peace is restored: check out http://www.agence-expeditionstenere.com/ They provided us with great service). In terms of culture, artefacts, African Jewellery and art in West Africa, Mali is a must see, particulalry the Dogon areas ( you can contact Mussa Ouedrago on moussaouedrago@yahoo.fr. he is an excellent tour guide). In Mali, it worth seeing Djenne which has the largest mud mosque in the world and you can go sailing on the river Niger in Mopti too! Togo and Benin are also quite interesting in terms of art and artefacts. If you are interested in a combination of sea culture and history, then Ghana is your pays! Unfortunately I have not been to Congo, Cote d'Ivoire or Mauritania. Another country of interest is Mozambique especially for the food and the sea. Pemba and Maputo are worth visiting. Malawi is great for surfing and artefacts too. PS Another great thing about Mali is the music (see Putamayo World Music, I personally recommend the MALI compilation CD).
Bon chance avec votre voyage! J'espere que mon reponse est utile. Hope you understand my poor French!
Cheers!</p>
