UOSSM is deeply concerned about the extreme deterioration of the humanitarian and medical situation in the besieged city of Homs, where thousands of civilians are facing horrendous living conditions. UOSSM calls on the international humanitarian and medical organizations to provide urgent humanitarian aid and medical assistance to people in needs.
According to a report by Los Angeles Times, "Activists report that in parts of the Old City of Homs in central Syria, neighborhoods have been cut off from help for months." Aljazeera also reported in an article published on 02-20-2013 that, Fears are growing that parts of the Syrian city of Homs is on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe, with activists saying the lack of food and water is almost as great a threat as the violence. Moreover, the report stated that, "'Water has been cut off from Bab Amr for 18 days,'activists told Al Jazeera. 'There's no electricity, cooking oil or even bread. Many people are literally on the brink of starvation.' Homs Revolutionary Council reported a shortage of medicine.

We have been receiving desperate pleas from several local relief organizations, working in the city of Homs, asking for aid and medical assistance, reflecting the deterioration of the humanitarian and medical situation in the city, said Dr Zaher Sahloul, UOSSM Board Member & President of Syrian American Medical Society, adding that, The recent shelling of Al-Waar and Baba Amr districts, home to more than 500,000 people, most of whom were displaced from other areas in Homs, has aggravated the already stressed humanitarian situation, which unfortunately, had received little media coverage.
Asking for immediate relief and medical aids, Dr sahloul, said, We call on relief organizations to direct their attention to the bleeding city of Homs. We call on the International community to listen to the suffering of the people in Homs, and move proactively to stop the carnage.
The UOSSM is a coalition of humanitarian, non-governmental, and independent organizations that is created following the deadly events in Syria in 2011 to provide medical and humanitarian aid to Syrian people. UOSSM was established by 14 medical and relief organizations, and includes hundreds of physicians of mainly Syrian origin distributed in the United States, Canada, Europe, and in different Arab countries.
