To be a historian of Bangladesh is it necessary for me to have specialized knowledge of India and Pakistan?

I know Bangladesh was once part of pakistan (which itself was once part of India), but since I hope to study MODERN bangladesh (1971 onwards) must I have anymore than a general working knowledge of Indian and/or Pakistani history?
Bangladesh best answer:

I am a Bengali myself - and a lot of the influences come from the Indian culture. Pakistani culture - majority of that came from India as well... but some influenced Bangladesh (like religion).
As long as you know about India, you will know majority of the information needed.
