DALLAS (PRWEB) April 02, 2013
Dr. Celeste Monforton, at a young age, is master of many trades: medicine, science, law, labor, politics, education, government, justice, persuasion and how to light a fire under a cause. Her cause is fighting the ongoing existence of asbestos, the deadly carcinogen most U.S. citizens think is out of circulation in the modern world. Dr. Monforton says she is still dismayed that 99 percent of Americans would bet money asbestos is banned in our country. Every time people go to Google to prove her wrong, she describes, they are stunned to find out she is right. Asbestos is not banned in the United States of America.
Dr. Monforton holds a Doctorate in Public Health (2008) and Masters in Public Health (2004). Currently an assistant research professor at The George Washington Universitys School of Public Health and Health Services, she receives the highest student evaluations. From 1991-1995 she worked as an OSHA policy analyst, and at MSHA from 1996-2001 as special assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Labor. She has been appointed by governors to investigate state mining catastrophes; she has testified before Congress and the Senate to prompt passage of laws protecting American workers rights, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) enforcement, and Department of Labor (DOL) risk assessment.
Monfortons former professor and co-author Dr. David Michaels, Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA, presented his colleague with the Dr. Irving Selikoff Lifetime Achievement Award at ADAOs Ninth International Asbestos Awareness Conference in Washington last weekend. The national mesothelioma law firm of Baron and Budd this year repeated its platinum-level sponsorship of ADAO, joining the groups tireless advocacy which Celeste Monforton calls so vital.
Irving J. Selikoff, after whom the award is named, was a medical researcher/physician who co-discovered the cure tor tuberculosis in 1952 and, in the 1960s, first began linking asbestos exposure with mesothelioma and other lung cancers ultimately proving the tragic health hazards of asbestos inhalation and leading the first campaign against its use. His work is significantly responsible for asbestos regulation today.
Commenting on Dr. Monfortons selection as recipient of the Selikoff Award, Baron and Budd president and managing shareholder Russell Budd, said, Celeste, in many ways, is like Dr. Selikoff an unsinkable ship when it comes to asbestos advocacy. It takes knowledge and talent to make your voice heard, more so to make your voice understood, Budd said. Celestes mantra is, No one should have the right to poison someone and walk away. Who could argue with that statement?
This week, the nation will observe National Asbestos Awareness Week, a resolution petitioned by ADAO. For the full NAAW agenda: Asbestos: One Word. One World. One Week, see http://www.asbestosdiseaseawareness.org/archives/19322.
Baron and Budd, one of the nations defenders of mesothelioma patients for over 35 years, underwrites an online forum for mesothelioma patients and caregivers called Mesothelioma News. The open website is posted as a reader-friendly medical and legal resource to assist any person whose life has been affected by asbestos exposure. Visit http://www.mesotheliomanews.com.
