Is it difficult for an American teacher to go to other countries and teach?

Is it difficult for an American teacher to go to other countries and teach?

I mean in terms of finding a teaching position, and attaining citizenship. I was thinking Canada, New Zealand, or maybe United Arab Emirates. What kind of experience would I need etc?

United Arab Emirates best answer:

Answer by bw022
Forget about Canada. Unemployment rate for teachers is over 24%. Australia and New Zealand also have fairly high teacher unemployment rates. Remember that most other western nations have must lower native birth rates than the US and hence a declining school-aged population. Most western countries require you to have a job offer which has been approved by their immigration department -- i.e. it is in an industry where there is a shortage of domestic workers. Chances are they are not legally able to hire teachers. Most are also unionized and hence seniority. All would require you to be licensed in their country which typically requires proof of citizenship or legal residency, background checks, specific degrees, and practicums within the country.

Other than obtaining legal residency through say marriage, chances are there is no way of obtaining a teaching job in those countries -- and even then their job markets will be much worse than the United States.

For the like the UAE and other non-western countries, they would want people who could speak the native language (say Arabic) and teachers would be extremely temporary jobs.
