How are American women treated in Bahrain?

How are American women treated in Bahrain?

I am negotiating a job in Bahrain. Does anyone know (from actual experience!) how women are treated there? Could I move around the city alone? Leave the country alone/without "permission" from anyone? Will I be allowed to keep possession of my passport? I welcome any real knowledge of life there. I have been unable to find what I need on the internet.

Answer by JD
a female friend of mine has been there for years with the military. i don't know if she has it easier from being in the military, but generally, i think that if you respect their customs and dress modestly you should be fine. as far as i know, my friend went places alone and was never bothered - of course she was also very familiar with the culture. just ease into it and you'll be fine. don't take any chances of course, go places with other people when you can - but that's good advice anywhere. and no i don't believe anyone is going to take your passport.
