Answer by Two
Albania was part of the Roman Empire, and then the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire until it came under the control of the Bulgarians in the 9th century. An independent principality (not a kingdom) was established in Albania in the late 12th century under a native Albanian dynasty. Less than a hundred years later this was replaced by the Kingdom of Albania under a crusader king, Charles of Anjou. Charles was the first person to use the title "King of Albania". This kingdom was closely aligned with the Venetian Republic; it was in effect a client state. However, did not last long either; it broke apart into an number of principalities which, in time, were all absorbed into the Ottoman empire.

Various independence efforts were not successful; Albania remained part of the Ottoman empire until 1912, when as part of the outcome of the Balkan war an independent Albanian principality was established, under a prince imported from Germany for the purpose.

The principality did not last long; the country basically fell apart during the Great War, and various parts of it were occupied by French, German and Italian forces. After the war, afters some proposals to partition it between Serbia, Italy and Greece, Albania was re-established as an independent kingdom, but with a four-person "regency council" in place of a king. A republic was proclaimed in 1924 under Ahmed Bey Zogu; in 1928, the country was again proclaimed a kingdom, with Zogu as king.

Italy invaded in 1939, and the country spend the Second World War under first Italian, and then German, occupation. The most effective resistance to the occupation was provided by the Communist party and, at the end of the war, an Albanian republic was proclaimed under communist rule. Commuunist rule ended in 1991, but the republic continues today.

So, basically, there were three kingdoms of Albania; the crusader kingdom of the 13th/14th century, the short-lived 1912-14 kingdom, and the 1928-39 kingdom.
