Can a journalist commit treason by doing his perceived job ?

Both the L A Times and the N Y Times printed stories on the government program labeled "SWIFT" that dealt with tracking international money movement. Both papers were asked by the gov't not to run the stories and warned that doing so would injure the nation. Does a newspaper editor have the expertise to decide that the gov't experts are overstating the risk. Or did these editors simply not care about the risk ?
Cital...
That's alot of info to take in. If I understand what you are saying, journalists and editors are under no professional obligation to recognize the damage a story may inflict to the interests of the nation which hosts their company if they are confident their information is correct ???

Answer by Ernie
The editors simply wanted to sell copies, to heck with the risks. And yes, a newspaper can commit treason, simply because treason is the opinion of the government. In China, treason could mean posting a lewd phot of the Chinese president. In America there is a great deal more freedom, and the opinion of what treason is is a little more slack.
