Do Ladies Ski the Right Way?

lady

Sorry, if the headline is a bit provocative but the truth is that the humble ladies ski has come a long way since women first took up skiing.

Back in the grim old past ladies skis used to be just a matter of putting 'girlie' paints usually pinks and purple on existing skis or simply altering the binding mounting position of the ski.

But thanks to the ever-growing numbers of women skiing, the skis themselves have now been specifically designed to help a woman's different physical shape be more at ease on the ski and throughout the turn.

Manufacturers however, still like their skis to be clad in flowers and some even feel the need to put a mirror on the front, presumably for women to check their make-up!

As a general rule, ladies skis are generally lighter in weight and have a more forgiving tip section. Some have entirely different side cuts than the men's, and some do have different binding mounting positions.

If you are a female high performance skier or racer there are some skis in the unisex groups that will ski very well in the shorter sizes.

They are really forgiving, light and will help someone who is either trying to develop their parallel turns or is just feeling lazy and wants a ski that doesn't bite back.

Below are a few quick tips on finding the right ski for you:

Although styling is very important make sure your ski has been designed for the right function particularly when applying edge to avoid skidding or unpredictable breakaway.
Find out more about the terrain that you will be skiing on. Your travel agent should know.
Seek help and advice from your local ski store as the type of ski varies depending on the terrain.
Ask which slope your ski is best suited for i.e. blue or green, beginner or intermediate.
For high performance and racing skis choose shorter skis from the unisex section.
If you are in the UK, it is advisable to buy/rent from your local ski shop or online store due to a currently high Euro.
Make sure to choose the correct ski length.

If you're full conversant with the terms 'carve a double knife line' or doing a 'hockey stop' then you most probably belong to the more experienced group of skiers and therefore choosing from the unisex group of skis, as these are especially designed for skiing on all terrain.

Finally, if you're aiming to hold an edge on a long carve with no unpredictable breakaways then it's best to seek the advice of your local ladies ski shop and you will definitely be on the slope skking the right way.
