What exactly is going on between Israel and Iran?

What exactly is going on between Israel and Iran?

Can someone explain what exactly the underlying conflict is between Iran and Israel? I know about all the recent stories and the potential global crisis that could ensue should Iran attack Israel, but what is the actual conflict about and how long has it be going on? Thanks!
Okay frostitue, I want the generally accepted consensus. Don't delve too far into conspiracy, I just want something along the lines of what a reporter in Israel would tell the public.

According to Lonely Planet's guide to Iran,

"The ancient village of Abyaneh is the perfect antidote to Iran's bustling, traffic-clogged cities. Serenely situated at the foot of Mt. Karkas (3899m), Abyaneh's steep, twisting lanes of mud and stone wind through a maze of red mud-brick houses with lattice windows and fragile wooden balconies. It's a testament to both the age and isolation of Abyaneh that the elderly residents speak Middle Persian, an earlier incarnation of Farsi that disappeared centuries ago.

The village is at least 1,500 years old and faces east across a picturesque valley. It was built this way to maximise the sun it receives and minimise the effects of howling gales in winter. . .

In summer . . . it's refreshingly cool and Abyaneh is full of residents returning from winter in Tehran and tourists haggling with colorfully clad, toothless old women over the price of dried apples (they take no prisoners)."
